PERFORMANCE ADAPTATIONS

While there is a significant amount of overlap and variability within and between training zones, there are some general adaptations associated with training in each of these zones. Union Athletics programs are built with these adaptations in mind, and we develop workouts and long-term programs using this research.

RUNNING: TRAINING ZONES EXPLAINED

For years, scientists debated which training method and metric would most closely predict running success. For the most part, lactate threshold heart rate, and a runner’s pace at lactate threshold came out on top. Where lactate threshold pace becomes a challenge is when a runner leaves the road and heads to the trail.

PERCEIVED EXERTION EXPLAINED

At Union Athletics, we feel that perceived exertion is a great tool to control the intensity of a workout. Perceived exertion will be utilized for many of our programs, including strength training programs.
